Phu Quoc Island

beach

Vietnam's largest island is situated in the gulf of Thailand just off the southern coast of Vietnam and Cambodia. The island is 48 km in length, and 28 km across and has approximately 60,000 inhabitants living on it. It has had very little development and the infrastructure is still basic but there are a couple of small resorts that have been built to a good standard.

Half of the island remains forested and the beaches deserted and unspoilt.

The island was used as a prison during the French times and during the war with the Americans and then as a re-education camp after independence in 1975. Remains of the prison still exist to day.Phu Quoc has an airport and has daily flights to Ho Chi Minh City taking an hour.
