CHINDWIN RIVER CRUISE

In 1998 we ran our first Chindwin Reconnaissance. Despite the hazards of navigating so untamed a river it proved a resounding success and we reached the remote colonial outpost of Mawlaik. This unforgettable experience has since been repeated annually. The Chindwin is the most scenic of Burma's rivers with richly forested hills tumbling into the fast muddy waters. We pass through gorges and defiles and even witness whirlpools. Being a forgotten corner of Burma, we found the towns and villages rich in historical vestiges with lavishly appointed monasteries and temples.

Day One Rangoon: check in to the Kandawagyi Palace Hotel (or equivalent). City orientation tour followed by a visit the Shwedagon Pagoda
Day Two Fly to Pagan and board ship. Morning site seeing. Afternoon sail to Pakokku.
Day Three Enter the Chindwin and explore Lower Chindwin area
Day Four Monywa, the largest port on the Chindwin, with bustling docks and markets.
Day Five Explore the village of Kanee and climb the pagoda hill for its view point
Day Six Arrive at the enchanting town of Mingkin to explore temples and streets of old wooden houses
Day Seven We trek up the river bank to visit Gyi-taung-oo village with the oldest wood carved monastery in Burma with fascinating gold leaf wall decorations. Continue by foot or boat to see the woodcarvings at Kin monastery
Day Eight Kalewa - the main river port for the India border with its lively market
Day Nine Mawlaik - the British provincial capital with its golf course surrounded by splendid colonial mansions. Hopefully we will see working elephants
Day Ten Downstream with village stop and walk about. If time permits we visit the cave paintings at Hpo-win-daung
Day Eleven Downstream to reach Monywa. Drive to Mandalay by coach (4 hours). Overnight Sedona Hotel (or equivalent). Evening site seeing in Mandalay.
