Vietnam:

NEW!! Six Senses Spa at Ana Mandara Resort. We are pleased to announce a new deluxe alternative for spa treatment lovers. Ana Mandara Resort, Nha Trang has launched its 'Six Senses Spa.' Located alongside the beach with an additional restaurant and swimming pool, this spa offers a unique atmosphere, utilizing natural tones and a traditional Vietnamese style. Outside are four sunken treatment salas surrounded by pools and miniature waterfalls. Inside the spa, there are treatment rooms for couples or singles, with sunken jacuzzi baths, a Vichy shower and a Japanese bath. All staff are fully trained with massage course licenses.

Special rates at Heritage Halong. In April 2003, the Heritage Halong Hotel in Halong will offer promotional rates. Please contact your reservation officer for further information or room rates.

New Beachfront bungalows at Tropicana. Tropicana Phu Quoc has built nine new bungalows called 'Seaview Bungalows'. The former Seaview Bungalows and Family Bungalows have been renamed as 'Deluxe Garden Bungalows' and 'Suite Family Bungalows' respectively. Other categories and room rates remain unchanged.

Royal Danang renovation. Due to renovation, the Royal Hotel in Danang will be closed from 1 March to 31 May 2003. All affected bookings will be adjusted accordingly.

Halong Bay Hotel reopens. We are pleased to inform you that the Halong Bay Hotel has completed renovation and has opened its doors again to guests.

Cambodia:

Hotel Spotlight: Phnom Penh Hotel. The newly constructed deluxe Phnom Penh Hotel is planned to open in June 2003, located in the center of the city on Monivong Boulevard. The 400 rooms at the Phnom Penh Hotel boast pleasant views of the Boeung Kak Lake, the swimming pool or the city. All rooms feature electronic key card access, air-conditioning, minibar, television, IDD telephone, shower, bath, hair dryer and laptop connection.

Announcement from the Royal Phnom Penh Hotel. Due to damage caused to the Royal Phnom Penh Hotel on 29 January 2003, the hotel will be closed until further notice.

Laos:

Pansea Phou Vao Packages. The Pansea Phou Vao in Luang Prabang has completely finished upgrading all rooms, the restaurant and swimming pool. In celebration of this, the hotel will offer special discount packages for the upcoming low season as follows:
1) 20% discount on the low season rate for 3-night packages, with an additional 20% discount on one lunch.
2) 30% discount on the 3-night suite packages, including a one-hour massage for 2 persons.
3) 4 night stay for the price of 3 nights!
This special promotion is valid from 1 May to 30 September 2003.

Special promotion at The Grand. The Grand Hotel in Luang Prabang has launched a promotional package for the upcoming low season, valid from 1 April to 30 September 2003 (except for the Lao New Year from 12-17 April). The package includes one night accommodation with ABF, a welcome drink, fruit basket, airport transfer and city shuttle service. In addition, one complimentary set lunch or dinner will be included with a minimum stay of two nights.

Burma:

New cottages at Sandoway Resort. Due to increasing demand, the Sandoway Resort in Ngapali beach is now constructing 20 new cottages. Ten are beachfront and the rest are seaview. All cottages are built in a shaded coconut grove, surrounded by wide areas of lush garden to ensure privacy. This construction is expected to finish within April 2003 and will be ready for booking in November this year.

Inle Princess renovation. The Inle Princess Resort in Inle Lake will close during May and June due to major renovation. The resort will be back in service on 1 July 2003 and they will introduce their new lake view chalets in November 2003.


Travel

Cambodia:

Pochentong Airport renamed. Effective from 3 February 2003, the Pochentong International Airport has officially changed its name to "Phnom Penh International Airport".

New bus service in Siem Reap. There is a new bus service operating on round trip routes between Siem Reap (REP) - Poipet and REP - Phnom Penh (PNH). All buses have 45-seats, with air-conditioning. The trip from REP - Poipet takes approximately 5½ hours, while the trip from REP - PNH takes approximately 9½ hours. Both buses depart REP in the morning, at 7:40. The return bus departs Poipet at 3pm, while the return bus from PNH departs at 7.30am at the Neak Kraham office on Sisowath Quay.

Laos:

Wat Phou Cruise new program. The Wat Phou has introduced a new 3-day/2-night cruise program along the Mekong River to explore the sights of southern Laos, including Pakse, Champasak, Wat Phou, Khong Island and the Khon Phapheng waterfall. A former cargo boat converted into a luxury cruiser, the Wat Phou is fully appointed in teak wood with 12 twin cabins with private bath, and an upper deck lounge area with comfortable bamboo chairs, sofas and an exclusive bar. All meals and excursions are included.

The Mekong Club is an informal, non-political, non-commercial association, primarily concerned with promotion of the cultures of the "Mekong Region" (i.e. Viet Nam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and adjacent regions) in the UK. The Club will act as a forum for exchange of information and experience by:

  • The promotion of social and cultural events, tutorial groups and other meetings
  • Maintenance of a world wide web page and an address list for circulars on 'events and ideas'.

Membership is open to all, but it is envisaged that the club will be of particular interest to:

  • Expatriates from the Mekong Region living in the UK, with particular encouragement given to 2nd and 3rd generation family members.
  • British (and other European) citizens wishing to maintain in contact with people and issues in the Mekong Region.
  • Visitors from the Region needing temporary support whilst in the UK.
  • Citizens in the Mekong Region, wishing to develop contacts in the UK.

The Club will be organised by a chairperson, secretariat and webmaster, with a single, annual business meeting combined with a social event. The secretariat will be responsible for financial stewardship, with a "minimal" fund consisting of contributions for individual events and newsletters. An annual membership fee of £5 is envisaged per adult. For further details, please write or telephone the above number.
