Safety Measures
The Royal Thai Police has tightened its safety and security measures to reinstate visitors' confidence on safety and security during their stay in Thailand.

Mae Sai Border Opened
After almost 4 months of closure, the Mae Sai border was re-opened on 15th October 2002 at 6:30 a.m. The passengers can cross the border to Myanmar when they have a trip in Mae Sai from now on.

Shangri-La Horizon Cruise
Because the water level in Chao Phraya River is rising very high at this period, the Horizon Cruise comes temporarily into the dock of Nualchawee Pier until further notice.

TAT Relocating to Permanent Offices
As of 1st October 2002, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has begun relocating its head office from the premises it leases at Le Concorde Building on Ratchadaphisek Road to its own 18-story building on New Phetburi Road.

Three New International Checkpoints
The borders at Bavet, Svay Rieng province, and Kaom Samnor, Kandal province have opened at the beginning of August 2002. The O'Smach border, in Oddar Meanchey province has also opened as well at the end of August. The new checkpoints bring to a total of seven where visas upon entry can be issued.

Projects Toward Developing Tourism
The Ministry of Tourism and the Asian Development Bank agreed to a USD 20 million project toward developing tourism across the country. The project should begin next year and is scheduled to be complete in 2008.

Restoration of the Temples of Angkor
A new country has joined the effort to restore the temples of Angkor. Switzerland announced that it has agreed to restore the Banteay Srei temple. The restoration should begin in December 2002 or January 2003.

Rehabilitation of Sihanoukville Airport
The rehabilitation of Sihanoukville airport is scheduled to finish by November 2002. Ariston, a Malaysian Company, began renovating the airport last year.

Reopening of Myanmar-Thailand Border Gates
Myanmar-Thailand border crossing gates in Tachilek (opposite Mae Sai) and Kawthoung (opposite Ranong), which have been closed since 22nd May 2002, were reopened on 15th October 2002.

New River Cruise Product
The Irrawaddy Flotilla Company offers yet another new river cruise experience in Myanmar. The latest product "Middle Burma Cruise" is a 7-Day/6-Night Ayeyarwaddy river cruises on the historic RV Pandaw I. It is sailing between the culturally and archaeologically rich town of Bagan and Pyay. Pyay is very close to what was the seat of the Pyu Kingdom called Sri Ksetra from the 5th to the 9th century, with ruins of this ancient capital in its vicinity.

Increase of National Park's Entrance Fee
With an immediate announcement by the Minister of Forestry, the entrance fee to National Park has increased since 1st October 2002. This increase certainly effects the tour prices of June Bahtra & Suwan Macha.

Bangkok: The Conrad Bangkok has decided to postpone its opening date from 1st December to 20th December 2002. The new Kinnarin Spa with 10 treatment rooms at the Landmark Bangkok is scheduled to open late 2002. The Grand Pacific Hotel is now undergoing a significant revitalization program before the relaunch in early 2003 with its new name, the Westin Grande Sukhumvit, Bangkok.

Chiang Rai: Some new hotel developments are under way in Chiang Rai: The Golden Pine Resort & Spa will open by the end of this year. 80 Rooms in the 3-4 star category will be offered; the hotel is just a 15 minutes drive from the airport. The River House, opening in January 2003, is a 4 star property with 36 rooms. As the name suggests, the hotel is located on the river side.

Nakhon Pathom: A free botanical map is presented to every visitor of the Rose Garden Aprime Resort. The expansive gardens have been equipped with nameplates to identify all the individual trees. The process of planting a landscaped herbal garden is nearly complete.
Krabi: The construction of 12 more Executive Pavilion bungalows and Conference Room at the Golden Beach Resort has commenced on 11th October 2002 and will last till 31st December 2002.

Lampang: The Lampang River Lodge is gradually renovating all its rooms, and will finish the construction of the new swimming pool with Jacuzzi beginning of November 2002. Its range of guest activities has been expanded as well.

Phuket: The owner of Kalim Bay Garden has announced to temporarily close Kalim Bay Garden due to problems with the landlord until further notice. Due to the delay of a renovation plan at the Serene Resort, the hotel has to postpone the new opening date to 11th November 2002. Guests are still upgraded to the Tropical Garden Resort until 11th November 2002.

Samui: There is a construction of bungalows on the land next to the Chaba Cabana Beach Resort & Spa. This is scheduled to finish before the end of this year. The hotel renovation plan of Chaweng Regent Beach Resort has commenced on 15th October 2002 and is scheduled to be complete by 20th November 2002. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the renovation plan of the Coffee Shop at Fontana Resort has to be expanded to November 2002 instead of October 2002 as previously announced. The Imperial Samui has temporarily relocated its reception to the lower wing at the beach. This action has been taken to avoid any disturbance due to renovations taking place at the upper wing. A complete update on the latest developments of their renovation works plus a map and some pictures of the new rooms can be found here. The management of the Pavilion Resort has decided to give the standard wing a complete face-lift upgrade. The work is already under way and is scheduled for completion by 20th December 2002. In order to improve the Beachfront Suite at the Tongsai Bay the Beachfront Building is entirely closed from 23rd October - 15th December 2002 (7 weeks). The hotel will then test-run from 01st - 15th December 2002 to make sure things are really in-place.

Phnom Penh: Phnom Penh's only boutique Amanjaya Hotel is located on the riverside. The hotel opened on 31st October 2002. The Star Royal Hotel, situated on the riverside and 25 minutes drive from Pochentong International Airport, has opened on 1st September 2002.

Siem Reap: The new 4-star Victoria Hotel is scheduled to be complete by April 2003. The new 5-star Amansara Hotel is still under construction that will last till January 2003. The Sanctuary Resorts is currently developing an exciting new resort in Siem Reap. The resort, called Hotel de la Paix, will open in November 2003. The new Casa Angkor Hotel, has opened in mid September 2002. It is located in the city center of Siem Reap, just behind the Royal Palace. The Apsara Angkor Hotel was built in the blend style of Khmer and colonial architecture, is a new first category hotel and will open on 1st November 2002. The beautiful Art-Deco FCC Siem Reap was opened on 1st October 2002. The hotel is located next to the Royal Residence and by the Siem Reap river.

The 30-room boutique-style Savoy Hotel in Yangon has been admitted as a member of the prestigious Global Hotel Group SLH (Small Luxury Hotels of the World). The exclusive Sandoway Resort at pristine Ngapali Beach has right in time for the forthcoming season further upgraded their hotel product and has built-in modern air-conditioning units in all of their rooms. Dusit's appointment as the operator of the Inya Lake Hotel has been firmed up. The Management Agreement is expected to be finalized with the Dusit Group before the end of November 2002. After the re-branding is being completed, the hotel will be known as the Dusit Inya Lake Resort, the sole true city resort in Yangon.

The Ana Mandara Beach
Resort in Nha Tang officially opened its Spa. Located in a beachfront coconut plantation, the holistic Six Senses Spa "sets new standards in spa design with traditional Vietnamese architectural and water elements," according to statements made by the hotel management. The Furama Resort informed us about some closeout dates. The Hanoi Horison Hotel has won the "Best Service Hotel" award for 2001 from the readers of the Vietnam Economic Times. The Hoi An, the Hoi An Beach Resort, the Riverside Resort and the Victoria Sapa Hotel have all released their programs for Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations.

The Sheraton is planting its roots in Saigon. In the very heart of Saigon, Dong Khoi street, Sheraton will operate a brand new hotel, scheduled to open (with its first batch of 200 rooms) in mid 2003. The hotel will comprise of 382 guest rooms, a large conference room, a coffee shop, and a fusion-style restaurant with outdoor terrace. Our Vietnam team inspected the mock-up rooms: state-of-the-art, tastefully designed, with good color schemes and well-designed furniture.

New Direct Flights from Siem Reap
Danang is the newest international destination from Siem Reap Airport since last July 2nd, 2002. The new route is part of the Mekong World Heritage Tour, which links Siem Reap, Luang Prabang (Laos), Sukhothai (Thailand) and Hue (Vietnam). Hue, which is near Danang, may also be the destination of direct flights from Siem Reap later this year.

Angkor Air
A Thai airline has applied to begin offering domestic flights in Cambodia. Thai-based Phuket Air has applied to the State Secretariat for Civil Aviation to start up "Angkor Air" as a joint venture with Cambodian investors. No permission has been granted yet.

New Airlink between Thailand and Myanmar

A great new way of connecting the golden land to the regional air hub of Bangkok is about to become reality. As of 16th December 2002, Phuket Air (9R) operates three flights weekly between Bangkok and Myanmar's second largest city Mandalay. The flights on a Boeing 737-200 with a traveling time of 1 hour 45 minutes are operated on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Mekong Club is an informal, non-political, non-commercial association, primarily concerned with promotion of the cultures of the "Mekong Region" (i.e. Viet Nam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and adjacent regions) in the UK. The Club will act as a forum for exchange of information and experience by:

  • The promotion of social and cultural events, tutorial groups and other meetings
  • Maintenance of a world wide web page and an address list for circulars on 'events and ideas'.

Membership is open to all, but it is envisaged that the club will be of particular interest to:

  • Expatriates from the Mekong Region living in the UK, with particular encouragement given to 2nd and 3rd generation family members.
  • British (and other European) citizens wishing to maintain in contact with people and issues in the Mekong Region.
  • Visitors from the Region needing temporary support whilst in the UK.
  • Citizens in the Mekong Region, wishing to develop contacts in the UK.

The Club will be organised by a chairperson, secretariat and webmaster, with a single, annual business meeting combined with a social event. The secretariat will be responsible for financial stewardship, with a "minimal" fund consisting of contributions for individual events and newsletters. An annual membership fee of £5 is envisaged per adult. For further details, please write or telephone the above number.
