TRIP
PROFILE.

|
Our
trip takes us from Delhi, north by train to Kathgodam
in the state of Uttar Pradesh 507 km from Delhi. Then
we will drive into the Kumaon Hills to our first camp
at Pancheshwar. Here we fish the confluence of the river
Kali and the Sarju - an excellent fishing spot at an
altitude of approx. 1800 ft. There are some deep pools
and runs as well as rapids, providing great water for
the Mahseer to feed in.
After
a couple of days fishing we will raft down the river
(jeep transfers for those who prefer) stopping at various
spots to fish, with an overnight stop on route. We will
then camp at Chukha where we will spend another three
days fishing. This area is famous as the region where
Jim Corbett, the much renowned Hunter and naturalist,
shot the "Thak Man Eating Tiger" over fifty years ago.
We
will then travel to the Corbett National Park for an
overnight stay followed by a jeep safari before catching
the overnight train back to Delhi. We end the tour with
a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

ACCOMMODATION:
The accommodation
on this trip is a mixture of good quality private hotels (3-
star) in Delhi. We also spend two nights on the sleeper train,
which is quite comfortable, though despite being first class
is still rather basic.
We will
camp in two locations, the first at Pancheshwar, which is
a semi-permanent camp offering twin bedded tents, rugs on
the floors and is comfortable. Bathroom facilities are basic
and meals are prepared and eaten on site.
The camp
at Chukha is more basic with standard twin tents set up just
prior to our arrival. Bathroom facilities are basic and meals
are prepared and eaten on site.
WEATHER:
During
the time of the tour the weather in April is usually very
pleasant with cool, clear and dry conditions. The daytime
temperature at the fishing camps will be in the 20's but the
evenings and early mornings will be very cool. It is typically
very much like a British summer.
The river
will be cold and a cloudy milky colour due to the melting
snow from the mountains. This is however one of the best times
to fish for the Mahseer, as they will be migrating up river
to their spawning grounds. You will experience similar weather
conditions in October when the monsoons have ended and the
river level has fallen. Then the river is clearing after the
rains and the fish start to migrate down stream after laying
their eggs.
