Abngkor WatAngkor Wat
The temples are the creation of a succession of Khmer kings who presided over an empire that dominated the region from 800 to 1430, reaching its peak in the 12th century. From the 15th century, the temples were abandoned, forgotten by the world until their 'rediscovery' in 1861 by French naturalist Henri Mouhot. They then became a fascination to international travellers of the time and drew the rich and famous to the jungle setting to view the mysterious temple complex. However the tide of fortune once Carving at Angkor Wat again turned against the temples as war broke out in neighbouring Vietnam before engulfing the whole region. As this brutal war came to an end an even more destructive power swept across the land, as the Pol Pot regime closed the country to the outside world. Decades have past but now peace has returned and again history is repeating itself as Angkor opens it doors to those wishing to experience the archaeological splendour that will once again make the Temples the wonder of Asia.
