ANDAMAN
ISLANDS, INDIA - ADVENTURE CRUISE
Approximate
itinerary:
Day 1. Arrive
by plane in to Port Blair a.m. Transfer to hotel for check-in. Lunch.
Afternoon tour of Abadeen Bazaar (main market and central area of
Port Blair town), followed by Cellular jail tour (very historic
British colonial jail, completed in 1906, famous for the detention
of Indian Political prisoners). Dinner at a local restaurant that
specializes in delicious southern Indian cuisine. Overnight in hotel.
Day 2. Morning
tour of Ross Island. A small island, standing as guard to Port Blair
harbour. The island presently houses the ruins of old buildings
like ballroom, church, Chief Commissioner’s house, Gov. House, Hospital,
Bakery, Swimming pool, Press and troop Barracks. All in dilapidated
condition, reminiscent of the old British regime. The whole complex
is now in a state of complete disrepair and neglect, with the roots
of giant fig trees holding the old buildings together. Spotted deer
roam the grounds and very mature coconut trees grow where the tennis
courts once were.
Afternoon tour
of Viper Island. Dangerous convicts found guilty of violating the
rules of the Penal Settlement of Port Blair, were put in fetters
and were forced to work. Owing to the terrible working conditions,
the jail earned the notorious name ‘Viper Chain Gang Jail’. Gallows
built on top of the island, visible to all prisoners in the island,
signified death!
At the end of
the day, it will be time to board s/y
Crescent and depart Port Blair for the start of the Adventure
cruise.
Day 3. First
stop will be north Cinque Island. The lure of underwater coral gardens
and unspoiled beach, especially a sand bar between two islands,
are irresistible. Anchor for lunch, swimming, sea kayaking or snorkelling
at this beautiful island. After lunch a chance to go ashore and
either relax on the white sand beach, or for those more energetic
people, a chance to trek through the island to visit the lighthouse
on the north coast. A superb panoramic view is well worth the effort.
Local bird life
is prolific and the lighthouse acts as a great observation point.
Nicobar pigeons, parrots and other exotics can all be seen here.
During the trek, spotted deer and wild boar can be seen in the islands
interior. Late afternoon sail to South Cinque Island for evening
anchorage.
Day 4. Morning
at anchor in bay on west coast of South Cinque. Dolphins, turtles
and Manta Rays are commonly seen swimming in this area. A chance
to go ashore and walk the pristine beach. Good snorkelling and sea
kayaking here too. After lunch at anchor, set sail to Passage Island
and The Sisters Island. The Sisters has proven to be a breeding
ground for Manta’s. Good snorkel
ling and the
chance to do a dive here too.
Day 5. Explore
Havelock, Neel, Peel and Henry Lawrence Islands. Visit the village
on the North coast of Havelock, a chance to see swimming elephants.
Good fishing around these islands, as well as sea kayaking opportunities.
Dugongs live in the waters surrounding these islands and have been
seen on several occasions.
Day 6. The
day to be spent at Barron Island, the only active volcano in India,
with sheer sided walls that drop to great depths. The surrounding
waters are crystal clear and offer great drift diving and snorkelling.
The fishing is incredible; we guarantee to catch big fish here!
Day 7. Morning
exploration of Mayabunda; situated on the northeast coast of middle
Andaman Island, this sleepy little port offers scenic beauty and
beautiful beaches. Inhabited by the settlers from Burma, East Pakistan
and ex-convicts, Mayabanda has a distinct culture. Mangrove lined
creeks make for ideal kayaking opportunities. There are also turtle
nesting sites on the beaches here. Late afternoon, set sail for
evening anchorage at long island.
Day 8. Long
island offers beautiful long sandy beaches, unpolluted environment
and evergreen forests. The seas around this island are commonly
frequented by dolphin convoys. Afternoon to be spent snorkelling
and diving at Campbell shoals, then sail south to North and Middle
Button Islands, for more exploring. Late evening sail back to Port
Blair.
Day 9.
Disembark Crescent early morning in Port Blair to catch return flight
home.
