Classic tour of Northern Thailand

Mekong River

Sightseeing highlights of Thailand include a huge variety of religious and historic monuments; a rich cultural and artistic heritage; museums and beautiful scenery.

Such key elements are naturally included in sightseeing tour itineraries, but Mekong Travel also seeks out the less obvious attractions - interesting local markets, festivals, wherever these coincide with travel plans, traditional handicrafts and industries, plus the opportunity to meet local people in their own environments. Also included are opportunities to try regional cuisine and to see typical or traditional forms of entertainment.

The tour starts with a tranquil river cruise along the the Chao Phraya River 70 kms north to the former Siamese capital of Ayutthaya. This UNESCO World Heritage dates from (1350-1767) and its impressive ancient ruins of temples and palaces are reminders of the glorious past of this period of Thai history.

The tour continues to Korat once part of the Angkor-centred Khmer Empire and onto the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sukhothai, site of the first independent Thai kingdom. We end up in the heart of the fabled Golden Triangle, the mountainous region where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar (Burma) converge, an area populated by hilltribes whose lives have changed little over the centuries.
