Extreme Cardamoms Outwardbound

The Cardamom Mountains
Densely covered with lush virgin rainforest and rising to it's highest point at over 1,770m, the Cardamoms extend over an area of 4,420,000 hectares (10,922,060 acres) covering a large portion of SouthWestern Cambodia. The Cardamoms are considered to represent Southeast Asia's greatest natural resources in terms of virgin forest and wildlife habitats that have never been fully explored and\or catalogued. In 2000, Fauna and Flora International, Conservation International, and the Cambodian Ministry of Environment and Wildlife Protection Programme conducted a joint survey that covered only a small part of the vast expanse of unexplored land. Despite the
minimal area under observation the survey identified 30 large mammal species, 30 small mammal species, more than 450 birds, 64 reptiles, 30 amphibians, and many other plants and insects. To name just a few of the animals indigenous to this area would include elephants, tigers, clouded leopards and a variety of other mammals such as the Malaysian sun bear, pleated gibbons, and Siamese crocodiles all of which are high on the endangered species list and the only significant population thought to exist anywhere.

Where we are Located
We are based in the town of Sre Ambel on the scenic Sre Amble River near the foothills of the Cardamom Mountains. Sre Ambel is located in the district of Koh Kong province in Southwest Cambodia. Sre Ambel is approximately 140 km (two and a half hours) Southwest of Phnom Penh, and approximately 110km (one and a half hours) North of Sihanoukville. From Phnom Penh take route 4 South 130km; the town of Sre Ambel is 10km along the Koh Kong road.

Expeditions into the Interior
We offer a selection of keenly priced treks and adventures in Cambodia's pristine, forested Cardamom Mountains. We expect the activities on offer to develop to meet future demands of tourism. At present there are several expeditions organised to cater for varying levels of fitness, the varying Cambodian seasons, and the time schedules of tourists.

Itineries
1. Day trips (Rainy season / June - November)
Poung Roul Waterfall (spectacular in comparison with most S.E. Asian waterfalls)
The adventure begins with a 9.00am departure by speedboat from our own riverside dock in Sre Ambel. The river cruise offers an exciting ride through a narrow overgrown jungle river winding our way to the bottom of the waterfall. During the leisurely journey there will be many opportunities to stop, observe and record any bird
or wildlife that may appear. After pausing for lunch, we make our way through rice fields to a disused logging trail. Then we begin an invigorating walk 3km up to the waterfall where there will be time to relax and/or explore the surrounding area. After recreation we then return to the boat, travel back down the river with more
opportunities of exotic bird and wildlife observations with arrival back at Sre Ambel around sunset.

2. Day trips all year round (a day trip with three levels of fitness)
1) Ramblers trail no special level of fitness required.
2) Trekking, reasonable level of agility and fitness somewhat steep incline trail involves some physical exertion often in high humidity.
3) Trekking with a more demanding level of exertion and physical fitness (can still be done by most reasonably fit tourists, though may include scrambling up steep inclines clutching at any conveniently located branches, tree stumps, rocks, etc, often in high humidity.

We begin with a 9.00am departure by speedboat from our own riverside dock in Sre Ambel. The boat journey embarks on an exciting and scenic ride up a jungle-enclosed river to the trekking disembarkation point. After arrival the various trekking options begin (1,2, or 3). After lunch at scenic location of our choosing, we continue the trekking tour eventually making our way back to the river to make the return-ward journey. Having ample opportunities along the way for exploration of stunningly beautiful inlets, observations of wildlife, etc. while relaxing in the comfort and cool breeze of our boat. As the sun sets into the mountains we end our adventure back at the dock of Sre Ambel.
During these expeditions, experienced western and local guides will entertain, educate and edify clients with information and demonstrations of wildlife/jungle survival techniques. Riverside villages and local traditions will also be pointed out and explained throughout.

3. 2 Day tour (one night, either in jungle camp or at remote village. a), b) or c) options available)
Day 1,
The adventure begins with a 9.00am departure by speedboat from our own riverside dock in Sre Ambel. After the arrival at jungle insertion point we begin the trek through tropical rainforest along a challenging off-trail route to a delightful plateau, taking lunch at a convenient spot along the way. As we trek into the late afternoon we stop, rest, prepare camp and the evening meal whilst enjoying spectacular views at the idyllic site.
Day 2,
Morning, breakfast and break camp, then continuation of the trek through the pristine jungle enjoying the superb locations of undisturbed nature and wildlife in abundance. After lunch at a suitable location en route, we continue trekking until the arrival at the boat pick-up point and a sunset return to Sre Ambel along the river enjoying the various wildlife and scenic landscapes.
