Chiang
Mai was the capital of a kingdom known as Lanna, whose cultural
heritage can be seen today in the various temples, festivals
and traditions that continue to play a vital role in the region's
daily life. Interestingly, the city's original perimeter is
still marked by a moat and fortified gates. Within this area
are numerous ancient temples and ruins attesting to a distinguished
past.
Chiang
Rai is a quiet, yet historical town with a bustling market
and a hilltop temple overlooking the Kok River. The scenery
of the north is mountainous with many forests and if you are
feeling adventurous you can hire your own car and head off
to explore on your own. A major reason for visiting Northern
Thailand is to see the many hilltribe people residing in the
region. Both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai make a perfect base
for visiting hilltribe villages.
